Part 3 of my weekly SDCC posts highlights a few of the events outside of the convention that I've attended. Several are held throughout the weekend in which either attendees of SDCC and/or those without badges can partake. They are also either free or paid. For a few consecutive years, I've gone to
Nerd HQ, which has been held alongside SDCC with daily events and small celebrity panels. Actor Zachary Levi, founder of The Nerd Machine, formed a partnership with Break Media to bring Nerd HQ to SDCC since 2011. The locations for this off site have varied, bringing a different experience with each passing year. The panels, better known as Conversations for a Cause, have also varied. A few friends have attended the latter, which presents a more intimate setting since each conversation can only accommodate a small audience. The conversations are paid, with all proceeds going to Zach's preferred charity Operation Smile. All other events for the HQ are free.

Another event I've attended was the MTV2 Fan Fest. The
MTV Fandom Awards are taped during this event, which includes celebrity appearances and musical performances. It's exclusive to SDCC badge holders, and attendees get to engage in various activities and also get free food and drink. It's among my top events during SDCC. No information on appearances or performances have been confirmed for this year, but I look forward to checking it out again if my schedule allows.

Petco Park's Interactive Zone is one of my regular stops during the convention. It's conveniently located across the street from the Convention Center, and has various activations and food trucks. Last year it featured a giant dog house promoting the Peanuts Movie, and the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck made a stop there as well.

As with last year, I plan to not attend any panels in order to check out more off site events, both paid and free. The weeks until SDCC are becoming fewer fast. Time to get my itinerary together so I can make the most out of this year.
