A Gastronimic Adventure: SDCC and Afterward

Despite having to move around a lot during my time in San Diego, I still managed to check out a few new food places and also check off a few from my to-eat list.

After picking up our Conan tickets on Thursday, some of my group was in need of sustenance. We made the treck from the Spreckels Theatre to Werewolf. Their breakfast menu is available daily until 1 pm. Not bad for a place that's mainly a bar. Eggs Benedict is one of my top breakfast foods, so I was immediately drawn to their Pork Belly Benedict. This had poached eggs and thick slices of maple glazed pork belly on top of house made potato cakes. I've had my share of this dish, but Werewolf's is by far the most indulgent.

A friend and I had lunch at Lucha Libre the Monday following SDCC weekend. I've gone here a few times and have yet to be disappointed. My favorites include their Surfin' California burrito (featured on the show Man vs. Food) and their Champion's Fries. I would have kicked myself if I didn't get carne asada fries at least once during my trip. The craving or them surprisingly doesn't occur unless I'm in the area, and for good reason. I've tried versions of it up here in the Bay Area, but seriously there's no contest.

My food cravings were fulfilled twice on my last full day in SD. In the morning, I checked out the new location of Breakfast Republic at Liberty Station. I initially wanted to try something new, but couldn't resist ordering their Breakfast Mac N Cheese again with the Jurassic Pork bacon. I highly recommend adding the latter to any of their dishes that has it as a substitute, or as a side. This kept me full throughout most of the day. Another friend ordered their Steak 'N' Eggs. The skirt steak was perfectly cooked and tender, and the chimichurri sauce that topped it was amazing. I'd consider ordering this next time if I'm hungry enough. IF you're ever here, it's located right next to the Liberty Public Market, so you can give yourself an excuse to walk off that meal.

I had a pretty late dinner that night, but it was totally worth it. The poke hype has been steadily increasing in San Diego. Wish new establishments popping up every so often, I needed to visit at least one of them. I heard about Pokirrito through word of mouth and a post that a friend wrote about it. The website doesn't do justice with their menu. In fact, the Mauna Lani burrito that I ordered isn't even on it. From what I remember, it had fresh salmon, avocado, tamago, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, lotus chips (added a nice crunch), and crab. They also offer a selection of sauces that you can either top it with or dip it in while eating. I chose their Golden Ratio Pokirrito sauce. Fancy! This portion was definitely filling. I could only get through half of it and finished the rest the next morning. Despite the defeat, it was still pheNOMenal.

One of my friends has gotten into cold brew coffee lately. Last time I was in town, he had me try the Colada from Holsem and I was immediately hooked. This has cream of coconut, sweetened with cane sugar, and topped with toasted coconut. Coffee has never taken me to paradise before! They have other versions of flavored cold brew on their menu, which I hope to try during a future visit.

Gotta hand it to food and drink to help lessen the stress during my trip. It was surely comforting, and I can't wait to be back for more.
