If there's one thing that adds to the geek aesthetic of Comic-Con, it's the cosplay. A combination of the words
costume and
play, these outfits are what you would see both in and outside of the Convention Center. These range anywhere from popular Television shows, to movie characters, to Japanese anime. The possibilities are endless when it comes to cosplay. I've also included photos of myself and other attendees who've decided to dress for the occasion.
In 2010, I was Tifa Lockhart from
Final Fantasy VII. Although a pretty simple costume, it was made out of faux leather material, which would easily get hot while walking outside. It wasn't one of the more familiar get ups. Unless you played any Final Fantasy game, you wouldn't really know who I was. Despite that, I did manage to get noticed a few times.

I also dressed up as Lara Croft from Tomb Raider. Kept it simple again. Still can't get over how bad ass those gun holsters looked. Since I had weapons with me, the were checked before I could enter the exhibit hall.
A friend of mine also dressed up that year. In honor of Michael Jackson's passing, he dressed up as him from Thriller. Although he was a bit nervous about it, my friends and I told him it would be awesome if he pulled through. Sure enough, he was stopped every few minutes to take a photo. I laughed because he didn't practice his moves and someone had challenged him to a dance off. How can you be the King of Pop and not have your moves ready?! We ran into another person dressed up as MJ, except as the Captain EO version (I've seen this guy wearing the same thing year after year. It never gets old). Obviously the two of them had a photo-op.

In the following years, I've gone again as Tifa and also Maka Albarn from Soul Eater. The latter is my favorite and most popular cosplay to date. It was amazing to find out how many people watched that series. Then again, it's difficult to not notice someone walking around carrying a scythe. Just sayin. I even ran into some well known cosplayers that I follow via social media. Vampy (aka Vampybitme) just happened to be giving away pins while on the exhibit floor, so I was able to meet her and catch a quick photo before she was on her way. She's advanced so much with her costumes, but her Lady Punisher is still one of my favorites.

Here are a few more photos from past visits to SDCC.
Last year I dressed up as a gender bend of one of the characters from the anime Naruto. My friend usually goes as Kakashi from the Shippuden series. I decided to go for his Anbu character, except as a female. Confused? Don't worry about it. People who cosplay sometimes like to switch things up a bit. Either way, I had fun in this one. I also made the mask. Took nearly 3 weeks to complete it, and I might take it again with me this year if I'm unable to complete attempts at a more lightweight version of it.
