The Stars Come Out At Comic-Con

The second of my weekend SDCC posts is about one thing that's sure to be seen at the convention aside from all aspects of geek culture, the celebrities! With panels and autograph sessions happening inside the Convention Center, there's bound to be a celeb sighting. You can even find them wandering outside as well. Some other places to catch them are at sponsored off site events and nearby hotels. Here are a few encounters that I had while attending the convention in 2010.

While majority of people on the exhibit floor are either vendors or attendees, celebrities want in on a piece of the action too. There have been stories of a few wearing masks while blending in with the crowd so they won't get noticed, but a few actually prefer to go sans the disguise. You never know who could be around the same time you are. For instance, I happened to be just a few feet away from Tyrese as I was heading in the opposite direction. My phone camera was ready, so I snapped a quick photo. Slightly blurry quality, but it's proof!

In my opinion, the best place to get up close with the stars is at off site events. Some of them in the past were free to attend, but more are now either paid or by private invite. My friends and I met some of the cast of Chuck, which was awesome. While excusing myself to use the restroom, I got stopped by a tall guy in a suit. I had no idea what was happening until I saw Zachary Levi (aka Chuck himself) emerge from the men's room. Again, I was able to get a pic before being allowed through.

My absolute favorite encounter was the most random. My friends and I were at another event, which was at the former Puma Store in the Gaslamp. I was catered, had an open bar, DJ, and it was all free. Everything was in full swing when a rep from the LA Times stopped by. With him was Stan Lee. STAN LEE. What were the odds of him being at the same event we were at, more so that it was a party at a shoe store of all places. Within minutes, a crowd slowly gathered around him. Although he was only there for a short time, he was very nice, talked to everyone, and took photos. All of my group and I were able to get one with him. I have copies in at least 2 albums, and I still have yet to frame one of them.

Yep, that was a truly starstruck year for me. I did manage to come across a few more celebs in the years following, but the interaction was no contest. Although attending SDCC isn't exactly necessary in order to track them down, it does help. Here's a helpful post on what to do should you find yourself in the presence of a celebrity. Being anywhere around the convention area can always bring up the opportunity. Just keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready!
